MHLP Professor to Talk on Ghana Experience

Roger Peters, PhD, will provide a keynote presentation for the USF Fulbright Welcome Reception on September 11, 2015 at the Patel Center (CGS) 140. The presentation is entitled "Identifying Substance Abuse Treatment Needs on the Gold Coast: A 2015 Fulbright Specialist Project in Ghana". During the presentation, Dr. Peters will discuss his experiences in Ghana during June of 2015 as a Fulbright Specialist, while working with colleagues at the University of Cape Coast. During the Fulbright visit he examined the prevalence of substance use disorders in the 3 psychiatric hospitals in Ghana, and provided several training workshops and lectures. In addition to reviewing the collaborative Fulbright activities, Dr. Peters will comment on infrastructure and organizational challenges facing Ghana in developing mental health and substance abuse services.

Aging Studies Director Featured by the Gerontological Society of America

Brent Small, PhD, was featured on the website of the Gerontological Society of America. Dr. Small was recently elected to the Member-at-Large position in the Behavioral and Society Sciences section and will begin his term in November at the annual conference, this year in Orlando. The Gerontological Society of America is the oldest and largest interdisciplinary organization devoted to research, education, and practice in the field of aging. GSA's principal mission is to advance the study of aging and disseminate information among scientists, decision makers, and the general public.

CSD Grad Student Presents Work in Scotland

Karen Reddick, a Masters level student in Communication Sciences and Disorders and former USF undergraduate in the Language, Speech, and Hearing program, presented her master's thesis work entitled "Quantifying Ultrasound Data from a Tongue Twister Experiment Using Curve-to-Curve Distance" at the 18th International Congress of the Phonetic Sciences in Glasgow, Scotland. The conference, held once every four years, was attended by roughly 1000 researchers and students from around the world.

To assess the characteristics of adult opiate users in the U.S., Monnat and colleague Khary K. Rigg, PhD, department of mental health law and policy [sic], University of South Florida, analyzed data from the 2010 to 2013 National Survey on Drug Use and Health.
