Criminology Associate Professor to Present in China
 George Burruss, PhD, has been invited by the Zhejiang Police College to give a presentation on cybercrime and the police response to cybercrime. The theme of the conference is "Virtuality and Reality: Government Control Strategy for Internet Crime", which will be held from September 26th to the 29th at the Zhejiang Police College in Hangzhou, China.

MHLP Professor to Present in Vienna
 Roger Peters, PhD, has been invited to participate in a Meeting of Experts on "Treatment and Care of People with Drug Use Disorders in Contact with the Criminal Justice System: Alternatives to Conviction or Punishment", to be held in Vienna, Austria in early October, 2016. The meeting is a joint initiative of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the World Health Organization (WHO), with the objectives/goals as follows:
".... to provide support to Member States in their efforts to implement treatment and care for people affected by drug use disorders who are in contact with the criminal justice system. This initiative explore strategies and options to direct, in appropriate cases, people with drug use disorders who are in contact with the criminal justice system, to the health care system, in line with the international drug control conventions and other relevant legal instruments. It also contributes to implementing resolution 58/5 of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs, entitled "Supporting the collaboration of public health and justice authorities in pursuing alternative measures to conviction and punishment for appropriate drug related offences of a minor nature", which invited UNODC, in consultation with Member States, to provide tools on this topic. The specific purpose of the Meeting of Experts will be to review existing practices on treatment as an alternative to conviction or punishment and to provide inputs to the ongoing process of development of a handbook on the topic."
Dr. Peters will provide a presentation at the UNODC-WHO meeting on the topic of mental health courts and specialized court programs for persons who have co-occurring mental and substance use disorders.

Criminology Professor to Provide Training in Japan
 Richard Dembo, PhD, has been invited by a representative of the United Nations Asia and Far East Institute for the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders (UNAFEI) to provide training on juvenile justice issues and innovative services to representatives/delegates from 20 nations in Japan in late January 2017.

National Suicide Prevention Week is September 5 - 11: Know the Signs
Many suicides can be prevented and each of us can help by reaching out and responding when concerned. By knowing the warning signs, we can be better prepared to intervene when we see a friend, coworker, neighbor, or relative in distress. CBCS Student Success Café
 CBCS hosted a Week of Welcome Student Success Café during the first week of classes. Many students took advantage of the interactive round table discussions to learn more about undergraduate research, study abroad, stress management, employment, diversity and inclusion, the library, and the tutoring and writing center. Students were encouraged to Like our Facebook page, and were entered into a raffle drawing for several great prizes.

Supervisor Speaker Series 2016 - Interviewing Techniques

Florida KIDS COUNT Needs Your Cute Kid
Florida KIDS COUNT is in the midst of producing a County Data Book and we want faces of real Florida Kids to help tell our story. Our Data Book will be put in the hands of advocates, politicians, county planners and administrators who make decisions every day on how our tax dollars and efforts are spent. Let's make sure they are looking into the faces or our children as they do so.
We are looking for children and young people from infant to young adult, as well as all sizes, colors, and abilities! Family and group photos are welcome too, as long as they include children. Please send a photo of your child, grandchild, niece, nephew, neighbor, whoever (with permission of course). Keep your eyes out for newest book coming in December 2016. Heide, a criminology professor at the University of South Florida whose focus of study is on parenticide, and licensed mental health counselor, detailed more than two dozen specific examples from the evidence accumulated in the case and from interviews she had with Vonachen and a dozen others that she said indicated he suffered from a mental disorder.
