SW Associate Professor Receives Community Partnership Grant

Iraida Carrion, PhD, LCSW, has been awarded a grant from the Sociological Initiatives Foundation to engage in a University-Community Partnership to help Latino children and their caregivers. Dr. Carrion in collaboration with Hispanic Services Council and members of the North Tampa and Wimauma communities, will identify barriers to providing Latino children with bilingual (English/Spanish) books in their elementary schools, local libraries, and homes. Campus-community partnership will work toward decreasing the known low reading levels of Latino children in Tampa and Wimauma, Florida by increasing access to bilingual books in elementary schools, local libraries and homes.

Aging Studies Professor Named to Advisory Board

William Haley, PhD, has been named to the Advisory Board of the Tideswell Emerging Leaders in Aging program. This initiative funds leadership development for junior level health professionals who are emerging leaders in clinical care, research, and education on aging, and is sponsored by The American Geriatrics Society, the Association of Directors of Geriatric Academic Programs, and the Tideswell program at the University of California-San Francisco.

SW Interim Director has "Most Downloaded Children and Youth Services Review Article"
Alison Salloum, PhD, LCSW, was recently notified that her article "The role of self-care on compassion satisfaction, burnout and secondary trauma among child welfare workers" was one of the most downloaded articles in Children and Youth Services Review which is currently listed as the #1 journal in the field by Google Scholar.
Glenn E. Smith to Speak as Part of the Distinguished Lectureship in Aging

Dr. Glenn E. Smith, will present "Making the case for multi-component behavioral interventions for MCI" on Friday, February 17, 2017 at 10:30am in USF College of Public Health Auditorium 1023B. Smith is the Chair and Elizabeth Faulk Professor of the Department of Clinical and Health Psychology at the University of Florida. A board-certified neuropsychologist, Dr. Smith has authored or co-authored over 200 original articles, 14 book chapters, and 2 books. He received his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Nebraska, and then completed an internship at UCLA and a fellowship in clinical neuropsychology at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota (where he subsequently spent 25 years). He is the creator of the HABIT program (Healthy Action to Benefit Independence and Thinking™), which is designed to benefit people diagnosed with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). He is past Chair of the American Psychological Association's Committee on Aging, and is the principal investigator of a study titled 'Comparative Effectiveness of Behavioral Interventions to Prevent or Delay Dementia.'

Graduation with Distinction Nominations Due Soon

Students who do not meet traditional academic honors graduation criteria, but who still deserve some form of official recognition may be nominated to graduate with distinction. Guidelines for nominating such a student are available here. Nominations are due by 5:00pm, February 24th.
