City of Tampa Partners with CARD USF on Autism Friendly Tampa Initiative

Members of CARD-USF were recognized during Mayor Bob Buckhorn's annual State of the City speech on April 4th, as he announced Autism Friendly Tampa, an initiative that is spearheaded by Mayor Buckhorn in collaboration with the Center for Autism and Related Disabilities at USF (CARD_USF) in an effort to make Tampa one of America's most inclusive cities. Criminology Club: Juan Melendez on the Death Penalty

The USF Criminology Club invites you to a discussion on the death penalty with Mr. Juan Melendez, who spent nearly 18 years on Death Row for a crime he did not commit. The murder Mr. Melendez was convicted of took place in Polk County, and this is a relevant and important discussion for many members of our community.

The event will take place on Wednesday, April 12 from 5:00-6:30 PM in BSN 115 (College of Business auditorium).

LEAD Visits Tallahassee

Lori Rogovin led an enthusiastic group of BSW and MSW students in a 2-day service learning experience in Tallahassee for the 2017 Legislative Education and Advocacy Day coordinated by the Florida chapter of the National Association of Social Workers. 80 students registered to participate in this experience. Hundreds of social work students and faculty members across Florida participated in this advocacy opportunity in the State Capitol to educate elected officials on issues important to social workers and the clients they serve.

USF Receives $1.6 Million Grant to Continue Efforts to Address Drug Abuse and Related Behavioral Health Concerns of Children and Adolescents

The Institute for Transitional Research Education in Adolescent Drug Abuse (ITRE) project team has received a 5 year $1.6 million grant to continue addressing adolescent drug and substance use. Between 2012 and 2017, ITRE recruited 50 institute scholars from a variety of academic departments to provide skills for graduate level students and professionals. Learn more.

Members of CARD-USF were recognized by Mayor Bob Buckhorn during his State of the City Address on April 4 as he announced their partnership and the city's new Autism Friendly initiative.

The Missing Kids of Washington DC and Social Media

Rachel Powers, PhD of the Department of Criminology discussed the Washington DC Police Department's recent use of social media to locate missing children and the campaign's unintended consequences.

Dr. Kathryn Hyer, PhD, MPP; was mentioned in the March 2017 issue of Gerontology News from The Gerontological Society of America.

She was cited as the National Association of Geriatric Education Centers President and Principal Investigator of the GWEP for USF (of which there are only 44 federally funded programs in the country - funded by Health Resources Services Administration) talking about the work they are doing with health professions students and medical residents in patient centered medical homes. These students are learning to provide integrated primary care to older adults.
