Community Engagement 2017 in Ireland
The 2017 Ireland Study Abroad Program: Global Behavioral Healthcare: Solutions to Homelessness in the U.S, Ireland, Europe (Wales) and Canada successfully completed its fourth year. Led by Mark Engelhardt (Faculty - MHLP), the program included 10 students from 9 interdisciplinary majors.

Based out of Trinity College, Dublin for the first week, the students were immersed in classroom lectures from Dr. Eoin O'Sullivan and Dr. Paula Mayock (Trinity College); Sarah Sheridan (Focus Ireland) and Dr. Steve Gaetz and Melanie Redman (York U. Canada; A Way Home). Dr. Peter Mackie, from Cardiff U.,Wales presented at several community panels along with Mike Allen, a leading Irish/European advocate for ending Homelessness. The students were truly "engaged in the community" with an expanded array of field experiences in "Housing First Dublin" (Adrian Quin), employment and rural site visits by the Midlands Simon Community in Athlone ( CEO-Tony O'Riordan).

A centerpiece of the program was Dr. Sam Tsemberis (U.S.) the founder of Housing First, now an international model. Of course, the students were "welcomed" throughout the trip by the people of Ireland and Irish Educator, Michael O'Connor from Killarney. Student testimonies are available and recruitment has begun for 2018!

USF's Department of Mental Health Law and Policy (MHLP) is now home to an international center for addiction studies, the Universal Treatment Curriculum (UTC) Coordinating Center for North American Universities.  For this project, USF is partnering with the Colombo Plan in Sri Lanka, the U.S. Department of State, and the International Consortium of Universities for Drug Demand Reduction (ICUDDR).  Dr. Roger Peters, Professor and Fulbright Scholar, serves as Director for the UTC Coordinating Center, and Cary Hopkins Eyles, MA, CAP recently joined MHLP to serve as Assistant Director.  The Center will disseminate the UTC curriculum to universities throughout North America for use in developing
undergraduate and graduate programs in addiction studies.  The Center will also collaborate with a network of universities that are interested in implementing academic programs in addiction studies, and will work with the Colombo Plan and other international partners to help evaluate the effectiveness of the UTC curriculum and to develop a mentorship structure to augment current UTC training approaches.

The work of the UTC Coordinating Center was featured at the 2nd Annual Conference of the International Consortium for Drug Demand Reduction (ICUDDR) in Prague, Czech Republic on June 19-21, where Dr. Peters served as conference co-chair.  The ICUDDR conference included participants from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction, the U.S. Department of State, the Inter-American Drug Abuse Control Commission/Organization of American States, the International Society of Substance Use Professionals, and university representatives from Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, and North and South America.

Dr. Roger Peters, Director of the UTC Coordinating Center for North American Universities, provided several presentations at the ICUDDR conference in Prague, Czech Republic, held on June 19-21, 2017.

Newly-funded CBCS project "LEER" underway this past summer
USF School of Social Work and the Hispanic Services Council Community-University LEER (which means "to read" in Spanish) Collaborative Project, is a newly-funded project in CBCS by the Sociological Foundation Initiative. It began this summer in the North Tampa and Wimauma communities.

Prior to school ending, the team carefully purchased culturally-relevant, age-appropriate bilingual books for children and their parents. While we waited for the books to arrive, we conducted outreach with the assistance of community parent leaders, including interviews with parents and teachers about the role of reading among Latino children and families. Once the books arrived, the reading circles in both communities began.

Throughout the summer, community parent leaders engaged children and parents in a discussion regarding last week's assigned book, reviewing vocabulary words and introducing the upcoming book for the week, "Tortoise and the Tare" a beloved classic among English and Spanish speakers. Shortly after, the parents paired up with their children and began reading the Spanish text of the bilingual book to their children, after which the children read the English text to their parents.

Once the session was over, the children carefully placed the week's new book in their USF backpack, and together with their parents, committed to continue reading the book throughout the week. The cycle continued throughout the summer with brand new books. We are pleased that the goal of enhancing the children's reading levels through parental involvement is underway.  The children and the parents' excitement and enthusiasm for reading is contagious. What an excellent way to promote reading within families and promote health literacy!

On August 3, 2017,  faculty and staff of the College of Behavioral and Community Sciences were awarded designations as Certified Research Administrators at 8th Annual TRAIN Awards. The Research Administration Improvement Network recognizes USF faculty who have completed the process to become a Certified Research Administrator.  Michelle Kinzie and Thaddeus Haddad both completed the Basic Credential for this program. Also, Karen Collier and Michelle Kinzie both completed the Advanced Credential and were nominated for the Award for Excellence in Research Administration at USF. This certification emphasizes the best practices, resources and tools used in research at USF. These individuals will and should be used as resources for the CBCS community. Congratulations to these individuals for their hard work and dedication to the field of research!
