Social Work Students and Graduate Present at the American Public Health Association Conference in Atlanta
USF Master of Social Work students Amaya "Alex" Ramos and Joshua Zaris Goldman, and recent MSW graduate Sara Rhode, presented at the American Public Health Association (APHA) Conference in Atlanta earlier this month. Sara and Alex each presented on different topics involving trauma research conducted by Dr. Joshi and Dr. Rahill in Haiti. Their findings suggest the need for a trauma-informed HIV intervention for victims of non-partner sexual violence, while drawing attention to the syndemic effect of multiple traumas (including the major earthquake in 2010) on these victims. Joshua presented initial findings of an exploratory study conducted with Dr. Joshi and Dr. Rahill about the impact of the Swamp Apes nature-based recreation program. This program takes veterans into the Everglades National Park on service projects, with reported findings suggesting that it helps them heal from trauma and eases them back into civilian life. The Swamp Apes (www.swampapes.org) has been featured in many national media outlets for its signature activity of removing invasive and destructive Burmese pythons from the park. The APHA conference provided an opportunity for the students to network with some of the 13,000 health professionals attending from all over the world and learn about innovative research in the fields of public health and social work, all while proudly representing our College and the University.
