MHLP Faculty Members Receive Grant for SRI
Dr. Kathleen Moore and Dr. Roger Peters from the Department of Mental Health Law and Policy (MHLP) will serve as Principal Investigators for a new R25 grant received from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) to provide a Summer Research Institute (SRI) on addictions at USF/FMHI for undergraduate students (rising seniors).This is a 5-year grant in the amount of 525k, and is designed to prepare the future pool of junior researchers in the field of substance use and co-occurring disorders through a 3 month program of seminars, intensive research mentoring, and completion of a research project related to addiction treatment or prevention.The SRI grant project will begin with an initial cohort of 12 undergraduate students in the summer of 2019, and will continue with additional student cohorts through 2023.The Department and CBCS has offered similar SRI projects for the past 11 years, through grants received from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) and the National Science Foundation (NSF).The SRI project will provide students with advanced education and mentoring in addictions research, and will encourage their trajectory to matriculate to graduate school in behavioral health.

   


Center for Autism and Related Disabilities Director Honored
Dr. Karen Berkman, executive director of CARD was asked to attend an invitation only event at the United Nations in New York City for World Autism Day events. This specific event included international leaders in the area of employment and ASD from Fortune 500 Companies as well as others leading efforts from universities and agencies. Opportunities for networking and planning future projects was a part of the event. In addition, Dr. Berkman was honored by HIPPY USA to be an invited plenary session speaker along with Brenda Brinson, Hillsborough HIPPY Parent Involvement Program Director at their conference in San Antonio on April 10, 2018. Click here to read the full story and more about CARD-USF.
Department of Child & Family Studies Faculty Member Elected 
Congratulations to CFS Assistant Professor Dr. Rose Iovannone who is the newly elected president of the Association for Positive Behavior Support (APBS). APBS is an international organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of life of people, across the life-span, by promoting evidence-based and effective positive behavior support to realize socially valid and equitable outcomes for people, families, schools, agencies, and communities. Within CFS and the Florida Center for Inclusive Communities, Dr. Iovannone serves as the PI on the Interdisciplinary Center for Evaluation and Intervention grant and also collaborates on several other FCIC grants including the Florida PBIS Project and the Students with Autism Accessing General Education (SAAGE) grant.
Communication Sciences & Disorders Faculty Member Inducted Into Medical and Biological Engineering Institute
Congratulations to CSD Faculty member Dr. David Eddins for being inducted into The American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE). "Dr. Eddins was nominated, reviewed, and elected by peers and members of the College of Fellows for seminal contributions to the advancement of the fields of auditory perception and hearing loss, and development of assistive technologies." Check out the official press release for more information!

Outstanding CBCS Students Receive 2018 Moms Project Scholarship Award
Congratulations to Sierra Rowland, Flandra Ismajli, Sarah Serralta, and Ardhys De Leon for receiving the 2018 Moms Project Scholarship Awards at a breakfast held on April 3rd at the Marshal Student Center. The ceremony was attended by the award recipients, their Moms and mentors, donors, and other special guests. This impressive group of students are working on meaningful undergraduate research projects with their faculty mentors.

CBCS Student Receives Award on Research at 10th Annual Graduate Student Research Symposium
Congratulations to Monica Landers, CFS Social & Behavioral Researcher and third-year Criminology doctoral student, who received an award for her research at the 10th Annual Graduate Student Research Symposium.  She presented on her work involving the evaluation of CHANCE-a program providing services and supports to youth identified as victims of commercial sexual exploitation (CSE). This fund supports the student work and initiatives of the Applied Behavior Analysis doctoral programs. Expenses may include items such as equipment for student projects/research, scholarships, travel expenses for students to conferences and assistance with the costs of data collections and analysis.

The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders Audiology offers a fund for Audiology students.

Audiology Student Training Resource Fund-fund code 530046
This fund  designated for the purchase of special audiology equipment, supplies, or tools that enhance the clinical training experience of students enrolled in the Doctor of Audiology (AuD) program. This fund is also used for special training activities such as travel support for Audiology students attending conferences or continuing education training events. Recently, for example, this fund was used to support 5 students in the program to attend American Academy of Audiology conference in Indianapolis. The fund was also used to purchase a PA system for the students to use in public presentations at community education activities both on and off campus.
