Aging Studies Doctoral Candidate's Article Impacts Legislation in the Philippines, Goes Viral in Gerontology Community

Adrian N. S. Badana, MPH, CPH; a G.S.S. Doctoral Fellow and PhD candidate in the School of Aging Studies, is making an impact with his article "Aging in the Philippines," co-authored by Dr. Ross Andel, Director of the School of Aging Studies. The article, published in The Gerontologist, a top-tier outlet for aging-related research. Badana, an aspiring gerontologist and public health researcher, was inspired by his Filipino heritage and time spent living in Southeast Asia to research the Filipino population. The goal of Badana's article was to provide an overview of research on aging in the Philippines for other gerontologists and public health researchers, but the article went further than that - all the way to the House of Representatives of the Philippines and into potential legislation as it was cited as evidence by the House of Representatives in the Philippines in a bill designed to improve the lives and social welfare of older citizens. Spotlight on CBCS Faculty & Staff Giving

The College of Behavioral & Community Sciences has a tri-fold mission of teaching, research, and public service. And while this is a remarkable time in the history of the University of South Florida, a long-standing tradition that has helped mold that remarkable history is the USF Faculty & Staff Campaign. Your participation in the 2018-19 Faculty & Staff Campaign is an opportunity for you to invest in your university. Your gift will have far reaching impact. Perhaps it will help provide a scholarship for a deserving student. Maybe it will help establish an endowed chair or professor-ship to help support the impeccable work of our faculty. Or it may support research that will enhance the lives of many.

Whatever you choose to support, whatever amount you are able to give, your contribution will be impactful. We'll be sharing donor stories from some of our CBCS colleagues that may inspire you to find your passion here at USF too.

Julie Serovich, Ph.D.
Dean and Professor

Our first Spotlight on Faculty & Staff Giving starts with Dr. Mario Hernandez, Chair, Child and Family Studies. Christine Rover had an opportunity recently to sit with Dr. Hernandez to learn more about how he is a part of creating change and making a difference in the lives of many:

Christine: How long have you been giving to USF?
Dr. Hernandez: 25 years

C: Why is giving important to you?
Dr. H: Part of my obligation.

C: Why USF Foundation?
Dr. H: My gift is appreciated and I don't get multiple requests.

C: Tell us about some of the Funds you have supported.
Dr. H: ABA Student Assistance Fund #530025: Supports our students who would not be able to conduct research. This fund helps by providing tools used within a research project, like pedometers, and opportunities to present their research which prepares these students to become community engaged scholars and professionals.
Dr. H: Latino Scholarship Fund #660005 Donors are paired directly with students to serve as mentors during their time at USF and beyond. I have seen firsthand the impact this can have on the life of our USF students (and on the mentors).
Dr. H: WUSF #380001 WUSF "defined my life and gave me a view of what my life could be"
Dr. H: Child and Family Studies Fund #530013 I clearly see where my money goes and how it helps our programs, students and faculty & staff within CFS.
