Spotlight on CBCS Faculty & Staff Giving

The College of Behavioral & Community Sciences has a tri-fold mission of teaching, research, and public service. And while this is a remarkable time in the history of the University of South Florida, a long-standing tradition that has helped mold that remarkable history is the USF Faculty & Staff Campaign. Your participation in the 2018-19 Faculty & Staff Campaign is an opportunity for you to invest in your university. Your gift will have far reaching impact. Perhaps it will help provide a scholarship for a deserving student. Maybe it will help establish an endowed chair or professor-ship to help support the impeccable work of our faculty. Or it may support research that will enhance the lives of many.

Whatever you choose to support, whatever amount you are able to give, your contribution will be impactful. We'll be sharing donor stories from some of our CBCS colleagues that may inspire you to find your passion here at USF too.

Julie Serovich, Ph.D.
Dean and Professor

This week's Spotlight on Faculty & Staff Giving focuses on Dr. Karen Berkman, Executive Director of CARD and the Learning Academy at USF. Read how she is a part of creating change and making a difference in the lives of many:

Christine Rover: How long have you been giving to USF?
Dr. Berkman: Close to my tenure, 15 years. Fiesta by the Bay for Autism and CARD fundraisers, as well as gifts to funds that are important to me.

C: Why is giving important to you?
Dr. B: In a leadership position, I think you model what you expect of others. I always believe in paying it forward - if you do good things, good things will come back to you. I have decided to share my good fortune with others in hope that they would do the same for somebody else. I have committed 15 years of my life to USF. I have been instrumental in building a community that benefits people who might not be able to do for themselves. My hope is to give them a step up towards reaching their goals like people have done for me.

C: Why USF Foundation?
Dr. B: I work here. I know people here. I can make an impact here. I can see the benefit while I'm still here.

C: Tell us about some of the Funds you have supported through the USF Foundation.
Dr. B: USF Alumni Association LGBT Scholarship #906003: I established the endowed LGBT scholarship to ensure those students who didn't have support of their families felt that there was support from someone out there
Dr. B: The Learning Academy Success Fund #530041- Every student with autism on this campus that we serve can have access to same opportunities as everyone else
Dr. B: The Berkman Foundation has awarded multiple scholarships to students at USF: The Berkman Foundation, operated by my parents, was established to provide scholarships to support the educational pursuits of combat vets as well as faculty doing research in marketing.

Final inspiration from Dr. Berkman: If we have the capability to give and support people, it's important to reach out. I've been fortunate enough to be able to share what I have and help others along the way. It doesn't matter how much you give because any amount can make a difference to someone else. I hope you join me.

No matter where you are in life-just getting started or planning for retirement-a session with Sandy Couch, ChFC can help you create a plan for your goals. And, it's at no additional cost as a part of your retirement plan. You'll get answers to these questions and more:

  • Am I invested in the right mix of investments to help meet my goals?
  • Am I saving enough to create the retirement income I need?
  • How do I take income from my retirement account once I stop working?
