Spotlight on CBCS Faculty & Staff Giving

The College of Behavioral & Community Sciences has a tri-fold mission of teaching, research, and public service. And while this is a remarkable time in the history of the University of South Florida, a long-standing tradition that has helped mold that remarkable history is the USF Faculty & Staff Campaign. Your participation in the 2018-19 Faculty & Staff Campaign is an opportunity for you to invest in your university. Your gift will have far reaching impact. Perhaps it will help provide a scholarship for a deserving student. Maybe it will help establish an endowed chair or professor-ship to help support the impeccable work of our faculty. Or it may support research that will enhance the lives of many.

Whatever you choose to support, whatever amount you are able to give, your contribution will be impactful. We'll be sharing donor stories from some of our CBCS colleagues that may inspire you to find your passion here at USF too.

Julie Serovich, Ph.D.
Dean and Professor

Our weekly Spotlight on Faculty & Staff Giving focuses on Denise Barnes, CARD Consultant on the Adult Services Team. Learn more about some of Denise's areas of passion and inspiration here at USF!

Christine Rover: How long have you been giving to USF?
Denise: I've been donating to charities since 1989. I began giving when I worked for Goodwill International of Greater Detroit, through their United Way Campaign. I started giving to USF when I received my first paycheck.

C: Why is giving important to you?
Denise: Scholarships got me through grad school. At my alma mater, in Detroit, I was going to quit due to the financial burden grad assuming tuition and books cost. They offered me a full ride. I realized that someone else gave me a chance and I would always pay it forward.

I see many programs/organizations, especially non-profits, have things that they can't do/limited, due to their funding sources. When I give to a fund I can see what these organizations do for people they serve.

C: Why USF Foundation?
Denise: I can give to multiple funds across campus that are important to me, gifts are done through payroll deduction, and I don't have to renew them. I've made most of my gifts ongoing.

C: Tell us about some of the Funds you have supported.
Denise: Autism Services Fund #530002; Autism Endowment Fund #536001; Black Faculty & Staff Association Endowed Scholarship - #666059; Black Life Institute Fund #390210

Denise's inspiration for the week: When you're giving to USF funds it allows the university to help a student meet a need that enhances his/her capacity for success. Those needs might not be obvious to the naked eye, but that need can be the determining factor to his/her success or subsequent failure.

This quote from MLK Jr. inspires me "The time is right to do what is right"
