SW Associate Professor Selected to Fulbright Specialist Roster

The U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, and World Learning, has selected Dr. Iraida V. Carrion to join the Fulbright Specialist Roster in the area of social work. Associate Professor Carrion is the first faculty member in the USF School of Social Work appointed to the Fulbright Specialist Roster.

The Fulbright Specialist Program (FSP) sends faculty and professionals from the United States to businesses and academic institutions in more than 140 countries around the world. Countries eligible to participate in the program are those where there is a U.S. embassy or a Fulbright commission.

Selected specialists serve three-year appointments as expert consultants on research, curriculum and faculty development. Dr. Carrion is recognized nationally and internationally for her work pertaining to end-of-life care, cancer healthcare inequities, and health literacy among Latinos and indigenous communities. She is eager to share her knowledge and skills with researchers, scholars, and students globally. She will remain on the FSP's roster until February of 2022.

Dr. Carrion is proud to represent the School of Social Work and the university in this capacity and to bring her experiences back to USF. She has previously received an invitation for a Fulbright Specialist appointment in Spain and India.

USF Releases Results of Yearlong Study of Youth Mental Health in Sarasota County
CBCS researchers were involved in conducting an environmental scan of youth mental health services in Sarasota County to understand the current needs of children, adolescents, and young adults around mental health. The SARASOTA COUNTY Child and Youth Mental Health Environmental Scan included analysis of existing data, input from parents with children in services and young adults in services, and feedback from key stakeholders in the community. It also included a cost analysis of untreated and undertreated mental illness, as well as a strategic framework for incorporating findings into improvement efforts going forward. The project was funded by the Charles & Margery Barancik Foundation and the Gulf Coast Community Foundation.

During a recent invitation-only sharing event for community members in Sarasota County, Dr. Anna Abella, Dr. Norin Dollard and Dr. John Robst were on hand to share their findings. There was much positive feedback from both attendees and the press.

CBCS Student Employee of the Year - Winners

We are delighted to announce (after a tough selection process with some excellent nominations) the two winners of the Student Employee of the Year Award are Ash Sewell from the Dean's Office and Hannah Gospodinsky from Communication Sciences & Disorders.

Ash was nominated by his supervisor Carolyn Jewett. Ash is a Federal Work Study student for the CBCS Mailroom/front reception area. He supports the CBCS staff in copier supply/maintenance, daily mail run, HR file scanning, and answering phones. During his previous supervisor's leave, he has really stepped up to manage the day-to-day business of the reception/ mailroom.

Hannah was nominated by her supervisor Lisa Hansel. Hannah is an externship student in the Doctor of Audiology (Au.D.) program and an audiology graduate assistant (GA) in the USF Hearing Clinic within the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders. Hannah has been able to excel in her role as GA even though she reports to five primary supervisors and two secondary supervisors, each of whom specializes in a different area of audiology. She easily switches from one supervisor/patient type to the next with ease and confidence. This is a rare skill for many seasoned audiologists, let alone a fourth-year student.

A special mention goes to the other nominees: Matt Carver-Dean's Office; Timothy Freeman Gerhardt-MHLP; Jennifer Weyman-CFS; Norair Khachatryan-Criminology; Jordan Juniewic-Aging Studies; Erika Esnard- Aging Studies.

FCIC Trainee, Angela Makris, presents at the AUCD 2018 Conference in Washington D.C.

Angela Makris, a trainee with FCIC, completed her Master's in Public Health with a concentration in Social Marketing from USF in December 2018. As part of her research she presented a poster at the AUCD 2018 conference this past November. Her poster, Social Marketing interventions to Primary Care Physicians to Decrease Health Disparities for Patients with a Disability in a Primary Care Setting: A Scoping Review, was received with great enthusiasm for its line of inquiry and innovative thinking around the topic of application of a systems approach to social and behavioral theory for person-centered health behavior change, prevention and wellness for people with disabilities. She was sponsored by FCIC to attend the conference and was mentored by FCIC's Associate Director, Dr. Elizabeth Perkins. View a video of the poster presentation.

SW Faculty and Students UndocuALLY Trained

School of Social Work faculty and students attended an evening workshop on March 28th for UndocuALLY training. Modeled after UndocuALLY training at other institutions of higher education, this training was created to educate the USF community on the history, relevant legislation, and current realities of the undocumented community. This training strives to cultivate a more supportive environment for undocumented students in higher education and the University of South Florida. This is in alignment with the School's commitment to supporting the BSW program as a USF global pathway degree.
