CBCS Doctoral Student Receives Research Grant

Leigh Sams Ashley is the recipient of a Graduate Research Grant from the Organization for Autism Research. Ms. Ashley is a first year doctoral student in the CBCS Doctoral Program and a Florida Center for Inclusive Communities Interdisciplinary Trainee. She is planning a study for the fall that will examine the use of Pivotal Response Training by preschool children to support their peers with Autism Spectrum Disorders.

Social Work Ranked in the Top 25

The MSW program at the University of South Florida is featured in the Top 25 2019 national online college rankings, which use a combination of manually researched tuition, accreditation, and PayScale salary data.

Social Work Journal Celebrates 100th Volume

In 1920, social work pioneer Mary Richmond began an annual research and practice journal, called The Family, that she hoped would instruct the "friendly visitors" who managed aid to families dealing with urban poverty. A century later, the journal continues to be published, retitled Families in Society, with Sondra Fogel, PhD, ACSW, LCSW, as the editor-in-chief. Dr. Fogel started as a peer reviewer for the journal moving through various editorial positions until becoming chief editor in 2015. May is Better Hearing Month

May is National Better Hearing Month! According to the National Institute of Health NIDCD, approximately 20 percent (48 million) of American adults aged 20 to 69, have some trouble with hearing. Did you know that the Communication Sciences and Disorders Department has a hearing clinic here on campus? The USF Hearing Clinic is encouraging everyone at USF to make an appointment with our clinic if they suspect hearing loss for themselves or any of their loved ones. The USF Hearing Clinic provides hearing healthcare services to all ages and is located in the PCD Building-1st floor. All USF Faculty, Employees, Alumni, and Students are welcome. The USF Hearing Clinic takes most insurance plans and offers discounted rates on hearing devices and services to the USF community. Walking Wednesdays

The Healthy Culture Crew is starting up a new initiative: Walking Wednesdays! Join Liz Correia, CBCS HR Coordinator and Walking Enthusiast, in the MHC Atrium on Wednesday at 12:10 pm. We will be walking for 30 minutes around MHC, utilizing the covered sidewalks for shade.

    Walking for 30 minutes a day has many great health benefits including:
  • Increased heart and lung fitness
  • Reduces the risk of heart disease and stroke
  • Stronger bones and improved balance
  • Increased muscle strength and endurance
  • Reduced body fat

Come join us for a brisk fun walk and be back in time to have lunch!

The Health Culture Crew promotes well-being for employees in CBCS. The Crew publishes a monthly newsletter that contains wellness resources such as recipes, health tips, and exercises as well as reminders and events that are happening in the college regarding health and wellness such as trainings and fitness classes. 2019 Fall Forensic Series

MHLP will be hosting its 2019 Continuing Education Forensic Training Series for Mental Health Professionals in early August. Instruction in forensic evaluation of adults and juveniles involved in the legal system is complemented with focused training on assessing and managing patients' risk for violence in acute long-term care settings. The Forensic Evaluation and Juvenile Justice training will take place from August 12 - 13, 2019. The Florida Adult Forensic Examiner Training will be held from August 15 - 17, 2019.
