Passing of FMHI Dean Emeritus, Dr. Max Dertke

Dr. Max Dertke, Dean Emeritus of the Florida Mental Health Institute, died May 8, 2019, in Tampa. Max joined the Psychology Department at USF in 1967. Later, he transitioned to administration in the Student Affairs Office but returned to teaching in the Criminal Justice Department in 1982. In 1985, he moved to the Florida Mental Health Institute at USF as a deputy director. Subsequently, Max became the director, and, finally, the dean there. He retired from USF as Dean Emeritus in 1997 and served on several boards, including the LifePath Hospice, the Correctional Medical Authority, and the Social Sciences Institutional Review Board. A memorial celebration for Max will be held on Sunday, June 9, from 2-3:30 pm at the USF Gibbons Alumni Center. Full obituary...

CSD Students Studying Abroad in Italy

Students from CBCS's Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders are exploring linguistic and cultural diversity in many parts of Italy. They are visiting schools, clinics, cultural, and historical sites in Rome, Siena, and Orvieto.

May is Better Hearing Month

May is National Better Hearing Month! According to the National Institute of Health NIDCD, approximately 20 percent (48 million) of American adults aged 20 to 69, have some trouble with hearing. Did you know that the Communication Sciences and Disorders Department has a hearing clinic here on campus? The USF Hearing Clinic is encouraging everyone at USF to make an appointment with our clinic if they suspect hearing loss for themselves or any of their loved ones. The USF Hearing Clinic provides hearing healthcare services to all ages and is located in the PCD Building-1st floor. All USF Faculty, Employees, Alumni, and Students are welcome. The USF Hearing Clinic takes most insurance plans and offers discounted rates on hearing devices and services to the USF community. 2019 Fall Forensic Series

MHLP will be hosting its 2019 Continuing Education Forensic Training Series for Mental Health Professionals in early August. Instruction in forensic evaluation of adults and juveniles involved in the legal system is complemented with focused training on assessing and managing patients' risk for violence in acute long-term care settings. The Forensic Evaluation and Juvenile Justice training will take place from August 12 - 13, 2019. The Florida Adult Forensic Examiner Training will be held from August 15 - 17, 2019.
