USF ABA Program Faculty and Students Present at Inaugural Pan African Congress on Autism in Nairobi, Kenya

Dr. Kwang-Sun Blair and advisees Ashley Knochel and Rachel Sofarelli presented two papers on evidence-based interventions in ABA and the importance of cultural adaptations during the inaugural conference held in Nairobi, Kenya from April 27- 29, 2019. During the interactive presentations, they had the opportunity to exchange ideas with global leaders on ways to culturally adapt Westernized ABA procedures to meet the needs of clients and families in African contexts. There were over 20 African nations represented with over 200 people in attendance.

The Pan African Congress on Autism (PACA) is an international organization which aims to combat stigma and increase access to therapy support services for individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) throughout the African continent. Represented by a highly passionate coalition of professionals, parents, and individuals with ASD, PACA advocates for culturally responsive diagnosis, education, and evidence-base interventions across Africa.

2019 Summer Research Institute at FMHI
We would like to welcome our Summer Research Institute (SRI) scholars this Summer. This past year we received funding through the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA) for five years with a focus on addiction and co-occurring disorders. We received many applications from around the country for the 12 undergraduate slots. The selection and mentor matching process has resulted in a cohort that is culturally diverse as well as one that is highly skilled academically. The 12 undergraduates are from 11 institutions in eight different states. Our goal is actively engage some of the best and brightest students in research in behavioral health and to establish long-term professional relationships with them to help them in their careers. We believe that we benefit as much from our interactions with the students as they do from the mentorship we provide.
We welcome our SRI scholars and mentors to the SRI@FMHI and are excited about this Summer! Our scholars will be presenting their final research presentation on Wednesday, July 31st in the afternoon. We will be sending out more information later this Summer!
