Baker Act 2017/18 Annual Report Available

The Baker Act Fiscal Year 2017/2018 Annual Report is now available on the Baker Act Reporting Center website. This report is used by the Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) to meet a statutory reporting requirement as specified in the Baker Act. The Baker Act Reporting Center receives initiation forms for involuntary examinations from the 125 Baker Act receiving facilities statewide. Data are then entered from these forms. There were 205,781 involuntary (Baker Act) examinations in Florida in FY17/18, a 3% increase from FY16/17. In the 17 years from FY01/02 to FY17/18 involuntary examinations more than doubled (115% increase). More than 1 in 6 (18%) of involuntary examinations for FY17/18 were for children, with 7% for people 65 and older. New to the report for FY17/18 is information about suicide rates and reporting on counts for transition-aged adults (18-24). The Baker Act Reporting Center is funded by a contract with DCF. Report authors include Annette Christy, Daniel Ringhoff, Sara Rhode, Kevin Jenkins (all in the Department of Mental Health Law & Policy) and Kim Lersch (USF School of Information). The interactive maps on the Baker Act Reporting Center website are created by Dr. Lersch. In the coming months, these maps will be updated with information from FY17/18.
