MHLP Faculty Participate in International Conference in Peru

Dr. Kim Johnson, Dr. Roger Peters, and Cary Hopkins Eyles, MSW, CAP participated in the 4th Annual Conference of the International Consortium of Universities for Drug Demand Reduction (ICUDDR) in Cusco, Pero in late July. Dr. Kim Johnson serves as Executive Director of ICUDDR, Dr. Peters is Vice-President of ICUDDR, and Cary Hopkins Eyles serves as Coordinator of ICUDDR. The ICUDDR annual conference serves as a forum for universities from around the world to share information about developing academic programs in addiction studies, and about scientific developments related to prevention and treatment of substance use disorders. The organization is supported by the Colombo Plan, with funding provided by the U.S. Department of State. The ICUDDR conference in Cusco, Peru involved 418 participants from 31 countries, representing 46 different universities.

 

Men's Health: Better Sleep, Less Swelling and Reduced Risk of Inflammation

Soomi Lee, PhD, assistant professor in the School of Aging Studies, published a study which examined whether systemic inflammation often found in patients with osteoarthritis (OA) or rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is explained by poorer sleep health in the journal for Arthritis Care & Research. The research analyzed data from the Osteoporotic Fractures in Men Study, which included a cross-sectional sample of 2562 men over 65 years old with either OA or RA. Results from this study reveal different potential mechanisms by which OA and RA may increase risk for systemic inflammation and suggests that promoting sleep health in men with OA may help reduce the risk of systemic inflammation. 2019 Fall Forensic Series

MHLP will be hosting its 2019 Continuing Education Forensic Training Series for Mental Health Professionals in early August. Instruction in forensic evaluation of adults and juveniles involved in the legal system is complemented with focused training on assessing and managing patients' risk for violence in acute long-term care settings. The Forensic Evaluation and Juvenile Justice training will take place from August 12 - 13, 2019. The Florida Adult Forensic Examiner Training will be held from August 15 - 17, 2019. Richard Prudom to Speak as Part of the Distinguished Policy Lecture

CommuniqueRichard Prudom, will present "Florida's Vision for Livable Communities: How USF Can Help" on Friday, September 27, 2019 at 10:30am in USF Collage of Nursing, MDN 2005. Mr. Prudom was appointed in January 2019 as Secretary for the Florida Department of Elder Affairs (DOEA), the State Unit on Aging, whose mission is to help Florida's 5.5 million elders remain healthy, safe, and independent. With 30 years in executive leadership with the State of Florida, he has worked to develop, implement, and lead public policies and programs that improve the lives of Florida families. During his time at DOEA, Mr. Prudom also led several initiatives, including the Dementia Care and Cure Initiative (DCCI) and the revitalization of the Communities for a Lifetime Initiative. He leads the Department's efforts to make Florida an Age-Friendly State in close partnership with AARP and their Network of Age-Friendly Communities.

Effective Fall 2019, Midterm Grades Due Week 7-8 of Semester

In Spring 2019 the midterm grade policy changed to make midterm grades due week 7-8 in an effort to facilitate performance toward our student success initiatives. The Office of the Registrar's calendar was recently updated to reflect the new dates in accordance with the new policy. For the Fall 2019, midterm grading opens on October 7 and closes on October 18. The new dates should be reflected in Fall 2019 course syllabi. Click here for the Registrar's calendar.
