Dr. Galea presents at the IAS Conference in Mexico City, Mexico

Dr. Galea (School of Social Work) was awarded a scholarship to present at the International AIDS Society's 10th Conference on HIV Science which took place in Mexico City during July 21-24. Dr. Galea's presentation, entitled "High levels of depression among Peruvian men who have sex with men and transgender women: implications for HIV prevention and treatment care," found that though the point prevalence of depression was near 50%, most was low/moderate in severity. Dr. Galea proposed that HIV prevention and care workers could be trained to deliver a brief depression intervention in the same service setting. Depression, which disproportionally affects sexual minorities and people living with HIV, is associated with poorer health outcomes.
