SW PhD Student Receives 2020 Bridging the Dream Scholarship

Incoming Social Work PhD student Stephanie Rosado has received a 2020 Bridging the Dream Scholarship for Graduate Students. This is a nationally competitive scholarship program from Sallie Mae. Stephanie obtained her Master of Social Work (MSW) degree from the University of Southern California (USC) Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work. As a former collegiate and professional athlete for the Puerto Rico Women's National Team as well as various leagues overseas, Stephanie is interested in the intersection of sports and social work (i.e. sport social work). During her MSW she became an executive committee member of the Alliance of Social Workers in Sport (ASWIS). This unique and immerging subspecialty views social work as a profession whose core values very much align with the needs of athletes --that athletes are a vulnerable population who are exposed to a myriad of physical, mental, emotional, behavioral, and systemic risk factors that contribute to wellbeing. She has also been named as a 2020 McKnight Doctoral Fellow. Read more...

Tammy Smith (CFS)
Pilot Studies of the ACCESS Customized Employment Training System (ACETS)
Sponsor: San Diego State University
2/1/2020-9/30/2020
Amount: $30,000

Through the Workforce Innovation and Opportunities Act (WIOA), state Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) systems are charged with adding customized employment (CE) strategies to their service menus. To comply with this provision, states need a method to train service providers to implement CE services in a sustainable, affordable, and consistent manner. Dr. Smith has been testing the Achieving Competitive Customized Employment through Specialized Services (ACCESS) CE intervention through a National Institutes of Mental Health (NIMH) grant. A training system founded on this user-friendly, fidelity-based intervention is in development. Pilot studies of the ACCESS Customized Employment Training System (ACETS) will be conducted to support a 5-year cycle renewal proposal for a national center grant at the Interwork Institute at San Diego State University (SDSU).
