SW Graduate Shares His "Comeback" Story

Jacob Glover(BSW, Spring 2020), Intake & Pre-Release Specialist at Ready4Work-Hillsborough shares his comeback story for #GivingTuesday. School of Social Work Instructor Chris Groeber adds, "Jacob is not just an outstanding example of what our BSW students are like as professionals. He is an example of what living life with a strengths-based approach looks like. His ability to be optimistic when times were tough, his ability to look past so many barriers and his vision of what could be are an example to all of us. As a professor, you hope to teach content and see your students master it, but to have a student teach you about the power of hope by embodying it has been a highlight of my career. Thanks Jacob Glover for being a great student and even better teacher."

MSW Student Awarded Masters Minority Fellowship

Congratulations to Melanie A. Rosler, a Master of Social Work student, who was awarded the Council on Social Work Education's (CSWE) Masters Minority Fellowship for the 2020-2021 cycle, funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). The Minority Fellowship Program (MFP) is designed to enhance the training of full-time, masters-level, direct practice-focused social work students interested in continuing their mental health and/or substance use disorder service delivery to racial/ethnic minorities. The purpose of the MFP is to reduce health disparities and improve behavioral healthcare outcomes for racially and ethnically diverse populations through an array of culturally competent trainings.

Melanie currently works in a psychology research laboratory where she is developing a culturally competent youth suicide prevention guide for Latinx families as part of a USF internal award. Her MSW placement is at Tampa General Hospital, Healthpark, an outpatient clinic serving low-income, predominately minority individuals. Melanie is also a facilitator for a healthy relationship program for people living with HIV. After graduation, she plans to continue her work with minorities by pursuing either a Master of Public Health or a Ph.D. with a focus on culturally competent program development to reduce health disparities.

USF Student Videos Foster Awareness About Communication Differences, Disorders

Students in the University of South Florida's Communication Sciences & Disorders (CSD) program are raising awareness about speech and hearing differences and disorders through a new video series tied to the holiday season. The students - all from the university's Sarasota-Manatee campus and members of the campus's National Student Speech Language and Hearing Association (NSSLHA) online chapter - say the project is a play on the annual 25 days of Christmas programming on some cable TV networks.

"We just thought this would be a great way to bring awareness to the many types of hearing and speech differences and disorders that affect millions of people," NSSLHA chapter President Tiffany Marsh said.

The minute-long videos will appear on the group's Facebook and Instagram pages starting December 1st and run each day after that through Christmas Day. The campaign falls under a larger outreach effort by the students called "Communication for All." In addition to raising awareness, they hope to advocate for those living with communication differences and disorders, which can affect people across their lifespan, often starting at an early age. ABA Master's Program 1st-Year Students Present Posters on Their Case Study Projects

1st-year students in the ABA Master's Program presented their case study projects druing a virtual poster presentation on Dec. 2. The posters profiled their case study projects completed for the course MHS6601 Functional Assessment. Microsoft Teams and Sway platforms allowed online faculty and students to visit each student's individual session and chat about the posters.

"During this challenging time, the students have put much time and effort to complete the project, and they were thrilled to have the faculty and doc students in their presentation rooms," said Associate Professor Kwang-Sun Cho Blair. All the students completed Phase 1 (Functional Behavior Assessment) with their clients, and a few of them completed Phase 2 (Hypothesis Testing/Functional Analysis) with their supervisors or classmates in mock trials or sessions, because they were unable to access their clients due to COVID-19.

#CARDisValuBULL: Autism Support & Empowerment

The Center for Autism & Related Disabilities at the University of South Florida (CARD-USF) was established by state statute in 1993 to serve individuals diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder and related disabilities at no charge. For 28 years, CARD has delivered on the promise to provide resources and direct support to individuals and their families, offered in person, virtually, and within the community. CARD delivers trainings and outreach for teachers, professionals, and businesses across 14 counties in southwest Florida. Now, we need YOUR help to continue the mission. To continue to deliver programs that educate and empower. To innovate and reflect community needs. To ensure that ALL voices are included and valued.

Why does CARD need your help NOW? As a state funded program, CARD was directed to significantly cut our operating budget. After reducing our expenses, we will still have to rely heavily on our USF Foundation Funds and donors like you.

Faculty/staff can make a payroll deduction gift AND still show as participating on the USF HerdFunder:

You can make a payroll deduction gift using the FSC contribution form and email it to fscampaign@usf.edu. Once we receive your form and see that it is to a HerdFunder fund, we can add your name to the HerdFunder donor wall on the back end so that your gift will show on the HerdFunder project. Please share how you would like your HerdFunder Donation listed on the Wall.
