ABA Program Receives 5-Year DOE Grant

The Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) Program has received a highly competitive five-year $1,195,721 grant from the Department of Education, Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services. Project iSED: Advancing Interdisciplinary Services for Students with Severe Emotional and Behavioral Disorders will prepare 33 scholars to serve as either Board Certified Behavior Analysts or School Social Workers who can collaboratively design and deliver evidence-based instruction and intensive individualized interventions and supports (PBIS) in natural environments, classroom, and schools for school-aged children with severe emotional and behavioral disorders. This effort represents a collaboration between the ABA Master's Program and the Master's in Social Work (MSW) Program within CBCS. They will also partner with three Florida school districts (Hillsborough, Pasco, and Manatee). Dr. Catia Cividini-Motta will serve as the Project Director. Drs. Kwang-Sun Cho Blair, Kimberly Crosland, and Alison Salloum from Social Work will serve at Project Co-Directors.

RMHC Program Receives Second 5-Year RSA Grant

The Rehabilitation & Mental Health Counseling Program has been awarded a second five-year, $1 million-dollar federal long-term training grant from the Rehabilitation Services Administration (RSA). The major purpose of the Rehabilitation Counseling Master's Degree Program - A Solution to Personnel Shortages in the Florida Public Vocational Rehabilitation System is to increase the supply of rehabilitation personnel available for employment as rehabilitation counselors in public and private sector and in nonprofit agencies involved in the vocational rehabilitation of individuals with disabilities. The Project Director is Dr. Christina Dillahunt-Aspillaga and Assistant Director is Dr. Tammy Jorgensen-Smith.

CFS Staff Among Awardees at 2020 USF Virtual Hispanic Heritage Awards Celebration

The University of South Florida Status of Latinos (SoL) Presidential Advisory Committee hosted the 2020 Virtual Hispanic Heritage Awards Celebration on Thursday, October 15th to recognize USF students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members who have significantly contributed to the Hispanic/Latino community in the past year. Congratulation to CFS awardees Yazmin Castellano and Lourdes QuiƱones. Both are members of the Center for Autism & Related Disabilities at USF (CARD-USF) team, and both have contributed significantly this year to the Hispanic/Latino communities. Read more...

SW Assistant Professor Invited to Present COVID-19 Research

Jerome Galea, PhD, MSW, was invited by the Peruvian Ministry of Health to present mental health service and research projects in the era of COVID-19. The presentation attracted over 600 attendees and was in recognition of World Mental Health Day on October 9, 2020.

CARD-USF Executive Director Participates in COVID-19 Panel Discussion

Dr. Beth Boone, Executive Director of the Center for Autism and Related Disabilities (CARD-USF), participated in a panel discussion on COVID-19 challenges and resources for individuals with autism and their families. This special, "Autism: Breakthrough to Hope, Coping With Crisis" aired on WEDU on September 28th, and is available on the PBS station's website.

Sleep Health Profiles in Middle-aged Adults in Relation to Cardiovascular Health

Middle-aged adults are vulnerable to having poor sleep, which is a public concern as it may lead to increased risks of health problems over time. We propose to use multidimensional sleep health profiles that measure "which" and "how many" sleep problems co-occur within individuals. Using data from the Midlife in the United States Study, the proposed study aims at examining the associations between sleep health profiles and cardiovascular health outcomes.

2020 Fall Faculty & Staff Assembly

CBCS held its annual Fall Faculty & Staff Assembly on Friday, October 16, 2020. New faculty/staff were introduced, as well as faculty promotions. Reports of the activities of the Faculty Senate, Faculty Council, Curriculum Committee, Diversity and Inclusion Committe and Research Council were presented followed by Dean Serovich's State of the College address. Dr's Jerome Galea and Kristyn Kosyluk then presented "Bending the Mental Distress Curve among COVID-19 Responder: A Pilot Feasibility Study".
